The Mona Lisa of Williamsburg

The Mona Lisa of Williamsburg

This mural, its real name is "Lost Time", is known by everyone as The Mona Lisa of Williamsburg, in reference to the Brooklyn neighborhood where it is located,, where Bedford Avenue meets Broadway and South 6th Street.

The mysterious attitude of the model suggested to someone a resemblance to the protagonist of Leonardo da Vinci's famous portrait.

The mural is based on a photograph that a seventeen year old High School student Steven Paul had taken of Nina Attal, a classmate.

Steven Paul, a senior at the Edward R. Murrow High School in Midwood, was already honored at Carnegie Hall as Gold Medalist for his black and white photograph, “Lost Time.”

Colossal Media, a Williamsburg-based organization that produces hand-painted murals and outdoor advertising, partnered with Scholastic to celebrate Steven’s artwork by hand painting Paul’s image to create a 4 story high mural overlooking Broadway Avenue in Williamsburg that now stands over the George B. Post Plaza, at the intersection of Bedford Avenue, Broadway and South 6th Street in Brooklyn.

The title came up during an NBC Nightly News piece about this Colossal Media art at the intersection where Bedford Avenue meets Broadway and South 6th Street.

The George B. Post Plaza is a pedestrian plaza just south of the Williamsburg Bridge in Brooklyn.
